Secrets of successful websites

Webmaster central

Google does its work by sending a piece of software called a robot (Google names it the Googlebot ) to all the sites it can find, "crawling" them and reporting its findings back to HQ.  This report forms the basis of its index of your site. If you think this is an invasion of your privacy you can tell Googlebot when it arrives it isn’t welcome and to go away.  If you do that, of course, your site won’t rank anywhere.

While Googlebot is doing its job it records a lot of information about your site.  This information is available to you through Webmaster Central and very informative it can be.  In fact anyone who’s serious about their site would be insane not to subscribe.

The main part of the service is called the Dashboard and it provides three main headings: "Site configuration", " Your site on the web" and "Diagnostics".     Two small but useful examples of the information provided are the keywords searchers are using to find your site and broken links within the site.

All for free.
