Secrets of successful websites

Google PageRank

PageRank is determined by Google based on the importance of your page. It is roughly based upon the quantity of inbound links as well as the PageRank of the pages providing the links. It is known that other factors, e.g. relevance of search words on the page and actual visits to the page reported by the Google toolbar also influence the PageRank.

Here are a few top tips which will help you understand PageRank and hopefully gain a good Google PageRank:

  • Google success comes down to quality links from websites and good content.
  • It important to consider who links to you and who you link to
  • Sites don’t have Google Pagerank, pages do.
  • Diversity of links is important, try to find independent pages, not the same source or domains
  • Avoid SPAM sites.  Only link to good Google approved sites.
  • Put anchor texts into every link you get
  • It helps to have a sitemap.xml
  • Keep creating content, this gives the opportunity to link to people and pulls more traffic to the site
  • Having a high PageRank page is pointless unless you are spreading that Google PR to other pages on your site via internal links
  • If your company uses a content management system, make sure that the system creates pages and links that search engines can crawl.
  • Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don't add much value for users coming from search engines.
